VietNamNet Bridge – The People’s Court of the northern province of Vinh Phuc on June 29 sentenced two former senior officials of Vinh Yen city five years in prison for making bogus projects to appropriate land. Six other former officials of Vinh Yen city were also sentenced in this case.






Former Party Chief Lai Huu Lan, 63, former Chairman Nguyen Ngoc Quyen, 54, and six officials of Vinh Yen City drew a bogus farm project in Dong Tam ward to appropriate land.

From September 2006 to August 2010, under the name of Dong Tam ward farm project, these officials revoked a vast area of agricultural land to give to Nguyen Anh Quan and Duong Dinh Tam.

The Vinh Phuc Province Department of Natural Resources and Environment protested the illegal land withdrawal but defendants intentionally submitted regularized documents to the Vinh Phuc People’s Committee for approval.

According to the indictment, defendants caused losses of nearly VND30 billion ($1.5 million) for the state.

Defendants were accused of misusing power in service, causing serious losses.

Quyen and Lan were sentenced five years in jail. The former Chief of Vinh Yen department of natural resources and environment, former Chief of Vinh Yen planning and finance department, former Vice Chair of Tam Dao district were sentenced two and a half years’ probation. Former Party Chief and former Chairman of Dong Tam Ward got three and a half years in jail. Duong Dinh Tam was sentenced two and a half years in prison.

Former Vice Chair of Vinh Phuc province Nguyen Van Hoa was served a warning for being irresponsible in duty, causing losses for the state.

Nguyen Anh Quan, who was considered as the ringleader, has run away.
