On June 7, the Investigation Police Agency under the Can Tho City Police announced criminal charges and the temporary detention of Vo Chi Cong, 47, a former alternate member of the Party Central Committee and former head of the Organization Commission of the former Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee.

Cong previously served as head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission of the Can Tho Party Committee and is currently deputy head of the commission.

According to Can Tho police, the agency had earlier opened a criminal case on May 24 involving alleged abuse of position and authority while performing official duties at the Organization Commission of the former Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee during the 2021-2023 period.

Based on preliminary investigative findings, authorities on June 7 announced criminal charges and detention orders for four suspects who previously held leadership and staff positions within the commission.

In addition to Vo Chi Cong, the three other suspects are Nguyen Thai Dang, former deputy head of the Organization Commission of the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee, currently permanent deputy secretary of My Tu Commune in Can Tho City; Ho Chi Thanh, former specialist at the commission and now working for the National Assembly Delegation and People's Council of Can Tho City; and Vo Thanh Luan, former specialist at the commission and currently a civil servant at the Party Building Board of Ho Dac Kien Commune, Can Tho City.

According to the initial investigation, between 2021 and 2023 the suspects allegedly abused their authority in administering benefits and policy payments for serving and retired officials under Regulation No. 113-QD/TU dated January 6, 2021, by authorizing expenditures in violation of regulations.

Investigators allege that the suspects subsequently created fraudulent documentation and financial records to settle the improperly used funds, causing estimated losses to the state budget of approximately $146,000.

The case remains under further investigation by the Can Tho City Police.

In July 2025, the Politburo decided to issue a formal warning against Vo Chi Cong. Authorities determined that during his tenure as a member of the Standing Committee of the Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee and head of its Organization Commission, he violated Party regulations and state laws in carrying out assigned responsibilities.

He was also found to have violated rules governing Party members' conduct and leadership accountability, causing serious consequences, generating negative public opinion and undermining the reputation of both the Party organization and his agency.

At the 12th Plenum of the Party Central Committee, members agreed to remove Vo Chi Cong from his position as an alternate member of the 13th Party Central Committee.
