Tram Be was arrested on August 1, 2017, and sentenced to seven years in prison for his criminal offenses in two cases.
In the first case, the HCMC People’s Court imposed a four-year sentence on him for his deliberate violations of the regulations in economic management, causing serious consequences.
Tram Be and Phan Huy Khang, former general director of Sacombank, failed to check the loan records of Pham Cong Danh, former chairman of the Vietnam Construction Bank (VNCB), and his group. Tram Be directed his subordinate to lend to Pham Cong Danh, causing huge losses to VNCB.
In the second case, he received a three-year sentence in July 2020 for his alleged violations of regulations on lending activities at commerical banks.
The indictment showed that he and eight employees of the now-defunct Southern Bank agreed to lend VND505 billion to Binh Phat Company, although they knew it was not eligible for the loans.
In a related development, Hua Thi Phan, former senior advisor of the board of TrustBank, died of illness on February 13 at the age of 76 after several years of living in a vegetative state. She was known as a tycoon who was involved in many violations in banking activities.
She was sentenced to 30 years in prison for her violations at OceanBank and TrustBank, including expropriation of VND12 trillion from TrustBank. She was forced to return VND16 trillion and before her death, she had returned VND7 trillion.
