VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese athletes won 18 gold medals on the fourth day of the Southeast Asian Games 2011, ranking third after Indonesia and Thailand. Gymnastics and track-and-field were the highlight of the day.

November 15 was the ‘golden day’ of Vietnam, with up to 18 gold medals from gymnastics (9), track-and-field (4), Vovinam (1), shooting (1), wrestling (2) and fencing (1).

At the end of the day, Indonesia took the lead with 76 gold, 60 silver and 60 bronze. Thailand maintained the second place with 48 gold, 35 silver, 57 bronze and Vietnam at the third place, with 44 gold, 46 silver and 52 bronze.

The top three is now far from others. Singapore currently has 25 gold, 26 silver and 41 bronze, Malaysia with 22-23-36, the Philippines 14-21-27, Laos 4-3-19 and Cambodia 2-7-10. Myanmar, Brunei and East Timor do not have any medal.

Hereafter is the achievement of Vietnam on November 15:

Track-and-field: Dao Xuan Cuong won a gold medal for men’s 20m running. Cuong is the first male runner who won a gold medal for Vietnam. He is considered as a new discovery.

After Cuong, Truong Thanh Hang and Duong Van Thai took two golds for men’s and women’s 800m running. The four gold medal of the day belonged to three-step jumper Nguyen Van Hung.

Successfully defending her championships for women’s 800m and 1,500m, but Thanh Hang was not very glad because she could not break the B standard for Olympics.

Another Queen of Speed, Vu Thi Huong, won only one bronze medal for women’s 4x100m running.

Gymnastics: Vietnamese gymnasts received up to nine gold medals. “Doll” Ngan Thuong win two gold medals for uneven bar and balance beam; Nguyen Thi Ha Thanh took a gold for vault; Nguyen Hoang Cuong obtained a gold for freestyle gymnastic; Nguyen Phuoc Hung, one of the most talented gymnasts of Vietnam at present, took two gold for still rings and men’s high bar; Dang Nam received a gold for still ring; Nguyen Ha Thanh with a gold medal for men’s high bar and Nguyen Tuan Dat with a gold medal for men’s vault.

With nine gold on November 15 and two gold on November 14, the gymnastic team makes a new record in the total number of gold that the gymnastic team has won at a SEA Games.

Vovinam: The 34th gold of Vietnam belonged to Vovinam artist Nguyen Duy Khanh.

Wrestling: Tran Van Duc took a gold for men’s 120kg and Tran Thi Dieu Ninh won another for women’s under 55kg event.

Fencing: Nguyen Thi Tuoi won the third gold medal for Vietnamese fencing while Le Thi Bich and Vu Thanh An obtained the silver medal.

Taekwondo: Ha Thi Nguyen defeated Cambodia’s Sorn Davin to win women’s under 73kg event.

Shooting: Tran Quoc Cuong received a gold for men’s 50m shooting while Hoang Xuan Vinh took a silver medal. Vinh won a gold one day ago. This is the fourth gold medal of Vietnamese shooter.
