The National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) has initiated a free taxi service, as part of a larger pilot project to discourage drunk driving, and thus reduce road accidents linked to alcohol consumption.

The service will first be piloted in 10 restaurants in Da Nang City for one year from this July.

Accordingly, restaurants participating in the project will provide overnight vehicle parking service to customers who consume alcohol, as well as help them to get a free taxi to return home via the smartphone application Grabtaxi.

The project is expected to be implemented in Ha Noi and HCM City next year, the NTSC said.

Traffic accidents linked to alcohol consumption accounted for about 1.6 per cent of the total accidents across the country in 2014, the police said.
