VietNamNet Bridge – While the society is angry at Tran Thi Xuan Nu, a teacher who threatened a boy by putting him into a lift,- as the result of which he was severely injured -, many students of pedagogical schools, who will become nursery school teachers in the future, know nothing about the story.

VietNamNet’s reporters conducted a mini survey among the students of pedagogical schools and noted down different opinions about the training they receive as future nursery teachers.

Students: we only focus on learning

“I rarely read online newspapers. Sometimes I go to Internet café, but just to chat with friends. I do not buy print need wspapers,” Thanh Hoa, a student of the Central Pre-school Teacher Training College, said.

Similar words were spoken by the students of the Hanoi University of Education.

It is quite a surprise that Internet, the most popular information channel for young people now, remains unfamiliar to the students, especially those living in dormitories.

There is no Internet connection at the Central Pre-school Teacher Training College. In fact, the students said they do not feel a demand to access  Internet. Their living rooms are simple, with beds and textbooks being the main assets.

While the society feels angry atTran Thi Xuan Nu, a infamous teacher, the future teachers know nothing about the story. It is clear that the lecturers at the colleges did not mention the story in their classes.

In the minds of the future teachers, violence never occurs to the pupils at nursery schools. The students whom VietNamNet met all said that they never heard about it before and never saw any violence case during their internships at nursery schools. They stressed that the schools where they spent internships are all prestigious schools, where experienced teachers are working

Training curriculums are very good

In order to become a nursery school teacher, students have to take many subjects, from physical and mental care to learning the skills of making quick decisions in specific circumstances. Especially, students have to learn the psychology of preschool age pupils.

Especially, lecturers always emphasise that nursery school teachers must not use threats to force children to what teachers want. Of course, the punishments like forcing pupils to stay at the corner of classrooms or putting them in toilets are the taboo.

“My lecturers always tell us not to threat children, because this may make them panic and they will become scared  of going to school and afraid of teachers,” Hoa said.

This is to say that threatening children is a teaching method created by teachers, not something they are trained to do at pedagogical schools.

Income low, but acceptable

When asked if the low salaries set for nursery school teachers would discourage them, the students said that 2.5 million dong a month would be a dream, while they would be satisfied with 1.5 million dong.

VietNamNet’s reporters pretended to begraduates students looking for jobs at a famous nursery school in Hanoi. The reporters were told that if they are short-listed and go through the interview round, they will have to go through a 1-month probation period. If they are found as meeting all the requirements, they will become official teachers and get the initial salary of 1.7 million dong a month.
