In some districts of Quang Ngai, this rate rises to 129 boys/100 girls.
According to the Quang Ngai Hospital, of 22,000 newborn babies in 2010 and 2011, the gender rate is 100 girls/124 boys.
Quang Ngai is among the ten provinces in Vietnam which have high gender imbalance rates. Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Xuyen has asked the province to take measures to balance the gender rate to avoid future problems.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Duc, deputy director of the local Department of Health, says that the gender imbalance rate in Quang Ngai is high because most of parents want to have sons to maintain the continuity of their family lines.
Moreover, fishermen all want to have many sons to work as fishermen.
