30-year-old Sebastian Schoch, a German physical and injury rehabilitation expert, has begun his work with Vietnam’s U-23 football squad this week.

Recommended by Klaus Eder, head of the physiatrist department of the German Football Federation, Schoch said he hoped to develop a long-term working relationship with the Vietnamese football team.

The doctor surprised the players with his fluent Vietnamese thanks to more than five years working in the SOS Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 as a physical therapist and English teacher.

Doctor Schoch has been assigned the first task of helping midfielders Long Giang and Thanh Luong recover from their injuries.

On September 11, German coach Falko Goetz and the U-23 players gathered at HCMC-based Thanh Long Sport Center to begin their two-month training program ahead the Indonesia SEA Games 2011.

During the training period, the squad will attend the HCMC Football Cup tournament held from September 20 to 24 in Thong Nhat Stadium and the VFF Cup in Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium from October 19 to 23.
