VietNamNet Bridge – A giant carp of up to 130 kilos was caught in Hau River in the southern province of An Giang.

Giant fish in Mekong River

The giant carp was sold to a restaurant in Long Xuyen city, An Giang on June 22, at the price of over VND1 million ($50) per kilo. The fish is nearly 2 meters long and over 130 kilos in weight.

On March 13, a fisherman in the southern province of Dong Thap also caught a giant carp of 150 kilos. This 2.5m long fish was caught in Tien River in Vinh Long province. The fisherman had to ask for help from ten people to take the fish to the shore.

The giant barb or Siamese giant carp, Catlocarpio siamensis is the largest species of cyprinid in the world. These migratory fish are found only in the Mae Klong, Mekong and Chao Phraya River basins in Southeast Asia. It has declined drastically due to habitat loss and overfishing, and it is now considered critically endangered.

The Tien and Hau rivers are branches of the Mekong River in Vietnam.
