VietNamNet Bridge - Just a few days after being flattened with 1,000 m3 of rock and soil, a big pit in Quy Loc commune, Yen Dinh district in Thanh Hoa province has subsided again and expanded to nearby private property.
The pit in Thanh Hoa.
Trinh Dinh Nghi, 44, a local man whose house was affected by the hole, said the local government used up to 1,000cu.m of rock and soil to fill the hole on November 13-15 but in early morning of November 23 the hole continued to sink again.
Nghi’s house was built nearly one year ago, at the cost of VND600 million ($30,000) – a huge amount of money for a farmer family. The man was very worried that the hole could swallow his new house since it is only less than 2m from the house.
"I thought that our family would have been safe when the hole was filled but now I’m very worried for the safety of my wife and children,” Nghi said.
Other local residents were in the same mood and some people said they did not dare to sleep at night.
Le Trung Thuy, chairman of Quy Loc commune, said he had reported the situation to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Thanh Hoa province. While waiting for guidance, the commune will level the pit.
Thuy said that this was a normal phenomenon because the pit had just been leveled.
Before being filled, the hole was nearly 30m wide and about 20m deep.
The local authorities have told local people to avoid the pit ,and depending on the situation, they will consider evacuating people to safe places.
The pit appeared in late October and it was filled on November 13.
