VietNamNet Bridge – In the last few days, serious traffic jams occurred during rush hour on the Northwestern gateway of HCM City. Thousands of motorbikes moved inch by inch while there were several vehicles on the lane for cars.

Since early May, the HCM City Department of Transport has divided this road into lanes
for cars and motorbikes. Transport officers, policemen and volunteers were sent to this
road during rush hours to prevent motorbikes from getting into the lane for cars.
As a result, the lane for motorbikes was stuck while the lane for car was very clear.

Ms. Thanh says that it took him 15 minutes to pass this road but since the
new policy was applied, the time was 45 minutes.

From 4pm, dozens of transport police officers and volunteers were present at intersections
on Truong Chinh road. These intersections are considered as “black spots”, where many
traffic accidents happened. Many of the accidents were caused by motorbike
drivers who got into the lane for cars.

A volunteer said that he had worked very hard in recent days but congestion was still dangerous.

Many drivers drove on pavement.

According to the Department of Transport, this policy aims to re-establish
traffic orders in the year of traffic safety 2012.

The department said that with 9m of width, the current lane for motorbikes is sufficient.

The agency said that congestion in recent days was possibly caused by the unexpected
increase of vehicles. Buses have been requested to run on the lane for cars.
