VietNamNet Bridge – Grandmaster Le Quang Liem (elo 2702) successfully thrashed his much stronger opponent World No.4 Alexander Grischuk 1.5-0.5 in their tiebreak of two rapid matches on August 19 to enter the Chess World Cup 4th round.

In the first match, Liem shocked his rival by attacking instead of defending to seek for a draw despite holding the black pieces.

His subtle tactic earned him a victory after 68 moves.

In the second match the Vietnamese player chose a safe approach to hold Grischuk to a draw after 102 moves.

Liem is scheduled to face Russian defending champion Peter Svidler (elo 2746) in the next round.

As this is the first time he has made it to the fourth round of the tournament Liem will receive at least US$25,000 in cash prize.
