For many years, buying gold on God of Wealth Day (the 10th day of the first lunar month) has become a habit for many people.

For over a decade, gold shops have been crowded with buyers on this occasion. While some buy only 0.05-0.1 tael, others purchase quantities ranging from several to dozens of taels.

Chu Thi Hong Phuong from Phu Thuong (Hanoi) said she has been buying gold on God of Wealth Day for many years. However, the amount purchased each year depends on her family's idle cash. Some years she buys 0.1-0.2 tael, while other years she buys more.

“Last year, I bought 1 tael of ring gold for over VND89.8 million. Compared to the current price, I have a profit of nearly VND91 million per tael,” she said.

As for the gold rings Phuong bought over 10 years ago, the profit has increased 4-5 times.

Gold is in its strongest upward cycle in history, with fluctuations reaching tens of millions of VND per tael in a single session.

In late January and early February this year, for example, gold prices fluctuated wildly. Gold recorded an all-time high of VND191.2 million per tael on January 29 before nearly plunging freely soon afterward.

In the past week, SJC gold prices at one point plummeted to the threshold of VND163-166 million per tael (buy-sell). Compared to the peak of VND191.2 million per tael on January 29, gold has decreased by more than VND25 million per tael. If accounting in the VND3 million spread between buying and selling prices, many people lost more than VND28 million per tael in just three sessions.

Nevertheless, in 2025, gold prices increased by 65 percent and continued to rise by nearly 30 percent in the first 29 days of the new year 2026. This means that those who queued to buy gold on God of Wealth Day in previous years have hit a jackpot.

Compiled data from VietNamNet shows that from 2018 to now, on the God of Wealth Day of the following year, the price of gold rings (the most popular type chosen by buyers) has been higher than the previous year (except for 2022).

Accordingly, gold rings jumped from VND37.2 million per tael in 2018 to VND180.7 million per tael (sell side) on the morning of February 9, 2026.

This means the current price of gold rings has increased by VND143.5 million per tael, equivalent to 385.8 percent compared to 2018.

On God of Wealth Day 2018 (February 25), gold rings of 0.1 to 0.5 tael were listed by Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) at VND37.2 million per tael (selling price).

By the following God of Wealth Day (February 14, 2019), the price rose slightly to VND37.25 million per tael. Thus, those who bought gold on God of Wealth Day 2018 and sold it after one year would have lost VND350,000 per tael.

However, on God of Wealth Day 2020 (February 3), gold rings at SJC surged to VND44.45 million per tael, a sharp increase of VND7.2 million per tael after just one year.

In 2021, the price on God of Wealth Day (February 21) continued to rise by another VND10.45 million per tael to VND54.9 million per tael. But the price unexpectedly dropped by VND700,000 per tael to VND54.2 million per tael on God of Wealth Day 2022 (February 10).

In 2023, on God of Wealth Day (January 31), gold ring prices returned to a slight upward trend, reaching VND55.5 million per tael. After that, plain round rings entered a fierce upward trend, recording VND64.7 million per tael on God of Wealth Day 2024 (February 19). On God of Wealth Day 2025 (February 7), gold rings at SJC were listed at VND89.8 million per tael, an increase of VND25.1 million per tael after exactly one year.

Notably, on the morning of February 9, 2026, the price of the precious metal soared to VND180.7 million per tael. Compared to God of Wealth Day 2025, the price of gold rings has increased by VND90.9 million per tael, equivalent to a 101.2 percent increase.

With an increase of over 100 percent, gold has become an attractive investment channel, providing the best profit in the context of relatively low bank interest rates and an unpredictable stock market.
