A representative of the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board announced the project’s updated details following the approval.
On December 16, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son signed the decision to adjust the investment policy for Hanoi’s Metro Line 2, specifically the Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao section (Line 2.1). This critical transport project aims to develop a modern and sustainable public transit system for the capital.
Project details:
The metro line will span 11.5 kilometers, including 8.9 kilometers underground and 2.6 kilometers elevated, with seven underground stations and three elevated stations.
The system will use 10 four-car trains running on dual standard gauge tracks (1,435 mm). A depot covering 17.5 hectares will be constructed in Xuan Dinh, Bac Tu Liem District.
The total estimated investment for the project is VND 35.588 trillion, marking an 80% increase compared to the original estimate. This includes: 167.079 billion yen (equivalent to VND 29.672 trillion) in ODA loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP); VND 5.916 trillion in counterpart funds from Hanoi’s budget.
The project timeline spans from 2009 to 2031, with construction expected to begin in 2025 following approval of the adjusted investment plan.
The Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao metro line is part of Metro Line 2, which serves as a vital backbone connecting the urban core with Noi Bai International Airport and northern districts of Hanoi. The entire Metro Line 2 network comprises three segments: Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao (Line 2.1); Tran Hung Dao – Thuong Dinh (Line 2.2); Noi Bai – Nam Thang Long (Line 2.3)
A representative of the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board highlighted the metro line’s multifaceted benefits: “Beyond improving transportation and reducing environmental impacts, the urban rail line will also enhance tourism and urban architecture in Hanoi. Integrating radial and ring routes will increase connectivity, disperse passengers from the city center, reduce travel times, and optimize system efficiency.”
This metro project represents a significant step towards building a modern, integrated, and sustainable transportation network for Hanoi. It is expected to contribute to the capital’s economic and social development while improving the quality of life for residents.
