Viet Nam, Algeria discuss trade, labour co-operation

Viet Nam's Ambassador to Algeria, Do Trong Cuong, and Viet Nam's Trade Counsellor, Nguyen Van Mui, met with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the Algerian region of Constantine (CCIC) to boost co-operation in trade and labour.

President of the CCIC Omar Mehsas said that Algerian businesses are keen to tap into Viet Nam's strengths and learn from the country's experience with construction, agriculture and seafood products, textiles and garments and traditional medicines.

Ambassador Cuong said that Viet Nam has much to share with regard to construction techniques, materials and worker training. Algeria's representative said that there will be more detailed discussions when the Vietnamese construction corporation Viglacera goes to Algeria to attend its International Construction Exhibition in May.

Algeria noted trade potential in a number of specific areas and suggested that Viet Nam provide specialists on the ground for training purposes.

Omar said an Algerian business delegation would visit Viet Nam to lay the foundations for long-term co-operation.

President Sang takes tour of Ninh Thuan

President Truong Tan Sang during talks with leaders and people of Ninh Thuan Province yesterday was in full praise of their spirit to give up their land for Viet Nam's first nuclear project.

"The sacrifice of the locals is for the common interest of millions of families throughout the country. Hence, the local administration has to care for their resettlement, which must be better than their past living conditions," he stressed.

He inspected the ongoing progress of the project to build a path along the coastline of Ninh Thuan Province and saw the site where the nuclear plant No.1 will be built in Vinh Truong Hamlet, Phuoc Dinh Commune, Thuan Nam District.

For the success of the project, Sang called on concerted efforts by all concerned parties, centrally and locally.

Working with the key leaders of Ninh Thuan administration, Sang analysed the advantages and disadvantages of the province. He emphasised that while promoting its potential in agriculture production and aquaculture, especially in producing breeds for sea products, enhancing rural development programmes as well as endeavouring for hunger eradication and poverty reduction, the local government should pay more attention to areas facing difficulties.

"In addition to your own efforts, you should call on outside investment, joining hands with enterprises to improve and upgrade infrastructure," he pointed out.

He required the provincial authorities instruct localities on how to create goods production and service provision areas in order to promote the strength of each area, citing salt making, sea food catching, tourism, and wind and solar energy as examples.

On Saturday Sang met with the leaders of Phuoc Tien Commune, Bac Ai District.

He praised the efforts made by the leaders and people in the commune in creating a new rural model which saw their living standards improve significantly.

The President said that he hoped that local people would take the initiative and apply new technologies in farming and combine production with trade and services.

He asked the local authorities to pay more attention to the families of policy beneficiaries, while helping the local people to raise productivity.

As a mountainous commune located in the west of Bac Ai District, Phuoc Tien is a former revolutionary base and home to seven ethnic groups.

After its huge contribution to the nation's struggles against foreign invaders, the officials and people in the area were presented with the title "Hero of People's Armed Forces".

The President also called on the rubber growing model experimentally carried out under a joint scheme between Ninh Thuan Province and the Viet Nam Rubber Group.

Subsequently, Sang visited Phuoc Hau Commune, Ninh Phuoc District, where half of the local residents are of the Cham ethnic minority. He praised the locals for launching their programme of independently building a new rural area by actively mobilising many resources to develop public amenities and rural infrastructure facilities.

Thai media highlights Vietnam resistance war

The Nation carried an article by Nipakporn Pengkaew expressing admiration for the steadfastness and bravery of the Vietnamese people during their past struggle against foreign aggressors.

The author recalls recent journey to Vietnam’s different historical sites that were used as revolutionary bases during the resistance war.

Nipakporn highlighted the strong will and sacrifices of the Vietnamese people during their past struggles for national independence and freedom, and expressed compassion for their lingering suffering caused by the wars, especially the horrific consequences of Agent Orange/Dioxin.
