Viet Nam, Cambodia reinforce maritime security cooperation

Viet Nam Marine Police and the Cambodian National Committee for Maritime Security have agreed to strengthen law enforcement cooperation at sea during a bilateral meeting on Monday, April 29, in HCM City.

The two sides reached an eight-article agreement in reinforcing cooperation in trans-national issues of mutual interest such as maritime safety and trans-national maritime crimes.

They also reached consensus on the content of their coming memorandum of understanding in four major issues relating to law enforcement at sea encompassing, trafficking, piracy, illegal fishing and environmental pollution.

Fisheries' supporting activities, search and rescue, and an annual common patrol were also agreed upon.

Law enforcement forces of nations in the Gulf of Thailand are expected to sit together at a Commander-level meeting due to take place this September in Viet Nam to discuss the signing of cooperation agreements.

Hamlets along Vietnam-Laos border to be twinned

The central province of Nghe An and its bordering Lao provinces are striving to push ahead the movement “twinned border hamlets”.

This is a very important issue, which was carried out for the first time and in line with a policy on people-to-people relations of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee’s Secretariat.

Nghe An and the Lao provinces of Xieng Khouang, Houa Phan and Bolikhamxay are promoting the plan to twin border hamlets among their residents.

In the short term, each district will select a hamlet for a pilot twinning project scheduled to take place on April 30. With experiences drawn from the project, other hamlets will be twinned later.

The purpose of the project is to better protect the two sides’ common borderline, ensure security and social order in border areas, fight epidemics and mitigate disasters, as well as boost bilateral economic, cultural and sports relations.

Nghe An shares a 419.5km borderline with the three Lao provinces.

Laos honours Vietnamese experts

A number of Vietnamese collectives and individuals have been honoured with Laos’ noble decorations for their great contributions to the building of a commemorative house of Lao students during the war time.

The honour was presented by Lao Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Kongsi Sengmani at a ceremony in Vientiane on April 29.

Colonel Nguyen Khac Lam, Rector of Border Guard College No. 1, received the third-class Labour Order.

The school, together with Blue Peace JSC, was also granted the Friendship Order.

Blue Peace JSC Director General Cu Thanh Tien got the second-class Order of Development.

The commemorative house of Lao students who lived and worked in Vietnam from 1960 to Lao Liberation Day was located in Tan Yen District, the northern province of Bac Giang.

Covering an area of 500 square metres, the 3.7 billion VND house is designed in Lao traditional architecture.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kongsi Sengmani expressed his thanks to the Party and State of Vietnam for raising and training thousands of Lao students during the war.

The students have contributed significantly to their home country’s development, he said, adding that many of them have played important roles in the Party and State from grassroots to central levels.

Lam pledged to preserve and use the house effectively to help younger generations understand more about the special relationship between Vietnam and Laos.
