Fruitful co-operation with Britain praised by Prime Minister Dung


Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung expressed his pleasure at the fruitful development of bilateral relations under the Viet Nam-UK strategic partnership, saying he wanted the two sides to make every effort to effectively implement the partnership for mutual benefit.

Prime Minister Dung made the statement during a reception for UK Minister of State for International Development Alan Duncan in Ha Noi yesterday, May 25.

He told Duncan that Viet Nam wanted the UK to continue supporting Viet Nam in infrastructure, human resources development and coping with climate change and sea water rise.

The UK was a big trade partner with Viet Nam, Dung said, and affirmed the Vietnamese Government would create conditions to speed up trade relations between the two countries.

Dung said Viet Nam would also strengthen co-operation with the UK in education and training, HIV/AIDS prevention and control, finance and banking as well as open a direct air link between Viet Nam and the UK.

Dung thanked the UK for providing official development assistance (ODA) to Viet Nam in recent years and affirmed that Viet Nam would use funds provided by the international community effectively.

Duncan told Dung that the UK Ministry of State for International Development highly valued the Viet Nam-UK strategic partnership, particularly in the areas of economy, trade, investment, education and training.

He said an agreement for relations under the Viet Nam-UK strategic partnership during the 2011-14 period would be signed today to speed up the co-operation between the two countries.

Duncan also said he wanted the two countries to further strengthen co-operation in HIV/AIDS prevention and control, anti-corruption, finance and banking, and aviation.


Russia backs expat Vietnamese


Russia will coordinate with Viet Nam, and with the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia in particular, to set up a working group to deal with issues affecting overseas Vietnamese (OV) in the country.

Director of the Russia Federal Migration Service Konstantin Romodonovski made this statement at his meeting with visiting Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Thanh Son on Tuesday.

Son, who is also Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, said the Vietnamese Party, State and Government were paying special attention to the situation of the Vietnamese community in Russia.

Viet Nam hoped that OV in Russia would live and work legally and abide by local law. This would serve the interests of both countries, with OV acting as a bridge to develop bilateral friendship as well as boosting the Viet Nam-Russia strategic partnership.

Romodonovski suggested the two countries should work harder on migration issues to create good conditions for OV in Russia and for the Russian community in Viet Nam. Thus they could contribute to each other's economies and help foster bilateral friendship.

To help the Vietnamese community in Russia, the two countries needed to complete a legal framework and sign more agreements on migration and employment.


Auditor praises Indonesia


Chief State auditor Vuong Dinh Hue praised Indonesia's role and its achievements as ASEAN chair during 2011.

Hue expressed his hope for increased co-operation between the two sides during a meeting with the Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament, Anis Matta, in Jakarta yesterday

He called on the Indonesian parliament to support co-operation towards establishing a supreme audit institution for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN SAI) by the end of this year.

Anis Matta said that the State Audit of Viet Nam (SAV), headed by Hue, had laid an excellent foundation for further co-operation between itself and the Supreme Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BKPRI).


Vietnam willing to assist Japan after disasters


The Vietnamese Government and people are willing to do all things possible to assist the Japanese people to overcome the consequences of the recent quake and tsunami, said Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai in Tokyo on May 25.

This statement was made during Mr Hai’s meetings with Japan’s ministers of foreign affairs, economy, trade industry, finance and land, infrastructure and tourism, and key officials of the Japanese Federation of Economic Organizations (Nippon Keidanren).
He expressed deep sympathy over heavy losses that the March 11 double disaster caused to the Japanese government and people and believed they will surmount all difficulties to resume normal production and continue development.
The Deputy PM expressed his thanks for Japan’s assistance to Vietnam despite difficulties, and assured that Vietnam will effectively use Japan’s official development assistance.
He stressed Vietnam’s readiness to work with Japan to accelerate major projects both sides agreed on.


Media leaders grasp Party Resolution


Senior officials of media and publishing agencies attended a conference in Hanoi on May 24-25 to gain a thorough understanding of the Resolution of the 11th National Party Congress.

Politburo member and Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) Dinh The Huynh affirmed the importance of comprehensively understanding Party Congress documents and bring them to life.
Mr Huynh, who also heads the CPVCC Commission for Communication and Education, said media and publishing agencies are important tools for implementing the 11th Congress’ Resolution and creating a consensus in ideology, will and action within the entire Party, among people and armed forces as well as in the whole society.


Greater Mekong sub-region serious on drug control


Member countries of the Memorandum of Understanding on Drug Control in the Greater Mekong sub-region reached in 1993 (MOU 1993) held a ministerial meeting in the Lao capital city of Vientiane on May 24.

MOU partners include Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
In his opening speech, Lao Prime Minister Thoongsing Thammavong expressed his hope that the meeting would find out methods to effectively handle drug-related problems.
The Lao government is ready to back joint efforts of the international community and the UNODC in drug control, the PM said.
The participants agreed on the need to maintain the MOU as a forum for regional countries to discuss information, exchange experience and enhance cooperation.
They proposed adjusting the scale of activities and deploying several prioritised projects within the framework of the MOU.
They also discussed and adopted a regional plan of action and set out a host of targets and long-term methods to effectively prevent drug production, trafficking and abuse in the next two years.
At the event, Deputy Minister of Public Security Lieut. Gen Pham Quy Ngo, who led the Vietnamese delegation, underscored the great efforts of the Vietnamese Government and relevant agencies in recent years.
The Vietnamese Government has developed the programme on drug control into a national target programme with an array of methods, Ngo noted.
He called for co-ordinated efforts to reduce drug demand and supply in the region, emphasizing the important role of regional cooperation in the battle, especially cooperation between countries sharing the common border.
Vietnam is doing its best to fulfill targets and requirements laid out in the plan of action for 2011, he said.
Since 1995, 16 ministerial-level meetings have been held rotationally in six member countries of the Greater Mekong sub-region.
