Nation's leaders pay tribute at war martyrs, heroes monument

The nation's top leaders laid a wreath and offered incense at the Monument to Heroes and Martyrs on the 64th War Invalids' and Martyrs' Day yesterday, July 27.

Among the attendants were Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.

The delegation also paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum.

Also yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan visited Hanoian families who were great contributors to the revolution.

One of them was Luc Thi Quy, 88, from Co Dien A Village, Tu Hiep Commune in Thanh Tri District. Quy is the mother of two martyrs of the American War.

Nhan asked authorised bodies to help Quy's family search for the lost remains of one of her sons.

The deputy PM also visited an invalid in Hoang Mai District and praised his efforts in battling the difficulties of life and work.

People throughout the nation also joined activities to commemorate those who have died or been wounded in wars.

According to the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, incense offering and candle lighting ceremonies simultaneously took place at 2,098 martyrs' gravesides nationwide on Tuesday evening. They paid tribute to those who laid down their lives for the country's independence.

The events drew the participation of tens of thousands of youths nationwide.

Personnel for councils, committees approved

The 13th National Assembly yesterday afternoon continued its sitting of the first session by approving personnel lists for a number of councils and committees.

The day's business also saw newly-elected NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung report on the results discussed by National Assembly delegations, with all NA deputies voting to approve candidates for positions as vice chairpersons and members of the Council of Ethnic Affairs; vice chairpersons and members of NA committees and members of the Secretariat of the NA session.

The Council of Ethnic Affairs, which has four vice chairpersons and a total of 40 members, had its candidates passed with 95.6 per cent of deputies voting in favour.

The Legal Committee's five vice chairpersons and 40 members were also passed during the vote, with 88.6 per cent of deputies voting for the candidates. The Justice Committee, with five vice-chairpersons and 30 members, saw candidates passed with an approval vote of 74.4 per cent.

The NA endorsed the Economic Committee, with 93.2 per cent of deputies voting in favour of the candidates for the committee's four vice chairpersons and 45 members. They also approved the Finance and Budget Committee with 94.2 per cent voting in favour of the four vice-chairpersons and 37 members.

National Defence and Security Committee received a 89.8 per cent vote for passing three vice chairpersons and 36 members. The Culture, Education, Youth and Children's Committee was endorsed with 86.2 per cent voting in favour of the four vice-chairpersons and 43 members.

Four vice chairpersons and 50 members were also approved for the Social Affairs Committee with an 82 per cent vote. The Committee of Science, Technology and Environment was endorsed with voting rates of 92 per cent for four vice chairperson and 33 members.

Three vice chairpersons and 36 members were also passed for the External Relations Committee, with 91 per cent of NA deputies voting in favour, while 96.8 per cent voted for the Secretariat of the National Assembly session's 13 heads and 12 members.

The chairmen of these committees were also members of the 13th NA Standing Committee, who were approved earlier.

Also at the session, Chairman Hung presented a statement for the relief of the State Auditor.

Honour for Finnish envoy

Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on behalf of the State of Viet Nam, presented a Friendship Medal to Finnish ambassador to Viet Nam Pekka Hyvonen at a ceremony yesterday.

The award recognised the ambassador's contributions to Viet Nam-Finland relations and co-operation.

Speaking at the ceremony, the ambassador expressed his pride in receiving the medal from the State of Viet Nam.

He said the award was a manifestation of friendship that Viet Nam had reserved for Finland.

The ambassador assured a continuation of his positive contributions to the two countries' co-operation.
