General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong on February 1 paid tribute to Nguyen Duc Canh, one of the founders of the CPV, in a memorial site dedicated to the late leader in Thai Thuy district, the northern province of Thai Binh on the occasion of his 110th birthday.
The delegation recalled the revolutionary life of Canh who devoted his whole life for the Party and people.
Canh was born on February 2, 1908 in Diem Dien village, in today Thai Thuy district of Thai Binh.
Being enlightened by the revolutionary ideology, he joined various patriotic movements in 1925-26 when he was studying in Thanh Chung Nam Dinh High School. Then he joined the Vietnam Youth Revolution Association, which was a turning point in his revolutionary life.
In 1928, he was assigned to work as Hai Phong Party Secretary. In 1929, the working class movement had developed well and Canh had made lots of contributions to Tong Cong Hoi Do Bac Ky (the predecessor of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour).
In March 1929, at House No 5D, Ham Long street of Hanoi, the first Communist unit in Vietnam was established with eight members including Canh.
In June 1929, he was elected to be a provisional member of the Central Committee of the Indochina Communist Party.
In April 1931, he was captured by the French. Though he was tortured by the invaders, he did not reveal any secrets of the Party. He was sentenced to death by the French and was killed in 1932.
During his stay in Thai Binh, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited and presented Tet gifts to 96-year-old Vietnam’s Heroic Mother Nguyen Thi Tuat in Tay An and 91-year old veteran communist Tran Thi Mien in An Ninh commune.
In a working session with leaders of Thai Binh, the Party chief recognised improvements in the province, especially in transportation system, infrastructure and local’s living conditions.
Noting that Thai Binh, a rice bowl of the country, has made a number of achievements, with rice production of 13 tonnes per hectares and transformed economic structure, he held that this is a firm foundation for the province to thrive.
He also asked the locality to focus on Party building and developing the sound political system. The provincial Party Committee should direct the implementation of the Party’s instruction in Party building to prevent “self-evolution” and “self-transformation” and degradation on political ideology and lifestyle.
On the occasion of the upcoming traditional New Year, the Party leader wished leaders and locals of Thai Binh good health, prosperity and success in fulfilling targets set in resolutions of the Party’s 12th Congress and the provincial Party Committee’s Congress.
Cambodian army delegation pays pre-Tet visit to Bac Lieu
A delegation from the Military Zone 3 of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces led by Commander Yoeung Sokhon visited Bac Lieu province on February 1 ahead of the traditional Lunar New Year.
During the reception, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Phan Nhu Nguyen briefed guests about the local socio-economic development 2017, saying that the province fulfilled and surpassed all plans with relatively high economic growth, progressing trade, and improved local lives.
He thanked the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces for their warm sentiments to Bac Lieu, contributing to further deepening the friendly neighborliness between the two nations.
Sokhon expressed his profound thanks to Vietnam for assisting Cambodia in the most difficult period and updated Bac Lieu authorities on his country’s socio-economic situation.
He wished that Bac Lieu and the Cambodian province of Preah Sihanouk will further tighten their ties for mutual development.
Cambodia will create the most favourable conditions and give priority to developing Preah Sihanouk into a socio-economic-cultural hub of the country, he said.
President pays pre-Tet visit to armed forces in Gia Lai
President Tran Dai Quang visits High Command of Army Corps No.3
President Tran Dai Quang lauded efforts of the High Command of Army Corps No.3 over the past 43 years during a working session in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai on February 1.
The visit took place on the occasion of the 88th Party founding anniversary (February 3) and the 50th anniversary of the General Tet Offensive in lead-up to the traditional Lunar New Year.
He asked the Army Corps No.3 to fully grasp as well as seriously and effectively implement resolutions and decrees on military affairs and national defence of the Party, State, the Central Military Commission, and the Defence Ministry, thoroughly analyse and forecast sabotage activities by hostile forces in the new situation.
The Army Corps No.3 must work closely with border guard and public security forces, and units concerned to readily fight “peace evolution”, violent disturbances and terrorism while promptly and effectively deal with contingencies, contributing to firmly maintaining political security, social safety and order; safeguarding independence, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, he said.
It was also required to pay attention to building a transparent and strong Party unit with political firmness and synergy, continue effectively realising the Resolution on strengthening Party building and rectification adopted by the fourth conference of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (11th and 12th tenure) and Directive No.05-CT/TW by the Politburo (12th tenure) on stepping up the campaign on studying and following moral example and lifestyle of President Ho Chi Minh.
The State leader requested the Army Corps No.3 partner with departments and agencies to urge the people to abide by the Party guidelines, and State laws and policies; offer support in poverty reduction, socio-economic and cultural development and disaster prevention.
Visiting Regiment of the Mobile Police of the Central Highlands, President Quang said as 2018 is a year crucial to the successful implementation of the Resolution adopted by the 12th National Party Congress and the 2016-2020 socio-economic development plan, the Regiment needs to firmly maintain political stability, safeguard territorial sovereignty and social safety and order, thus creating a favourable environment for national development.
In the afternoon the same day, he visited and presented gifts to heroic Vietnamese mother Le Thi Thue, 92, residing in Pleiku city.
Deputy PM meets the press ahead of Lunar New Year

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has lauded contributions of press agencies to promoting Vietnam’s image to the world over the past time.
Meeting with representatives of the press agencies on the threshold of the Lunar New Year in Hanoi on February 1, the official said 2017 is a successful year of external affairs.
Deputy PM and FM Minh said he was impressed by reporters’ professionalism, saying they have kept a close watch on events and overcome difficulties to provide information about Vietnam’s external affairs promptly and accurately.
He highlighted the local reporters’ role in popularizing thoroughly the activities of the APEC Year 2017 activities hosted by Vietnam, especially the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in November, central Da Nang city, thus spreading Vietnam’s image among international friends.
Many articles about APEC activities published by domestic press agencies were used by their foreign counterparts, he said, noting that the international media has also described 2017 as an outstanding year of Vietnam.
Besides, the domestic press agencies and their representative offices abroad have contributed to citizen protection, the official said.
Minh called on the press agencies, reporters and relevant units of ministries and agencies to continue accompanying the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in foreign news services and cover the country’s external activities in a timely manner, contributing to realising the foreign policy of the Party and the State.
Vietnam, Cambodia promote solidarity, friendship

Standing Deputy Secretary of the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang’s Party Committee Huynh Van Sum on February 1 held a reception for a delegation from the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces’ Military Zone 3 High Command who came to deliver Tet greetings to the local authorities and people.
Congratulating Cambodia’s achievements in the past years, Sum expressed his hope that the country will reap further success and bonds between the two countries in general and between Soc Trang and the Cambodian Military Zone 3 High Command in particular will become more tightened.
He wished that the Cambodian Government will create favourable conditions for Vietnamese nationals working and living in the country.
Meanwhile, Commander Yoeung Sokhon, who led the Cambodian delegation, informed the host of Cambodia’s political and socio-economic situation in the past year and affirmed that its achievements were attained thanks to support of Vietnamese people, including those from Soc Trang province.
He hoped that the friendship and solidarity between the two nations will further develop in the future.
He took the occasion to wish local authorities, armed forces and residents a happy new year.
President visits Kon Tum ahead of traditional Tet
President Tran Dai Quang visits Ro Koi Border Guard post
President Tran Dai Quang extended Lunar New Year (Tet) greetings to people in Kon Tum during his working trip to the Central Highlands province on February 2.
He visited and extended Tet greetings to officers and soldiers at the Ro Koi Border Guard post under the provincial Border Guard Command in Sa Thay district.
The President hailed the post for giving advice to the local authorities on political, socio-economic development, poverty reduction, social security, and natural disaster mitigation.
He urged the post to continue implementing effectively the resolutions and directives of the Party, State and army on protecting the national border, while actively fighting criminals and reactionaries to keep political security, social order and safety in border areas.
Ro Koi Border Guard post, with 50 officers and soldiers, is responsible for managing 11.2 km of border neighbouring Ta Veng district, Ratanakari province of Cambodia.
The unit has actively joined hands with the provincial chapter of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and the provincial Border Guard Command to build 28 charity houses in 2016, worth 58 million VND (2,300 USD).
On this occasion, President Quang visited and extended Tet greetings to local authorities and people in Ro Koi commune, Sa Thay province.
Ro Koi is a disadvantaged commune in the district, with poor households accounting for nearly 40 percent of the total population.
The State leader also visited and presented Tet gifts to Vietnamese Heroic Mother Dang Thi Thu, residing in Duy Tan ward, Kon Tum city; and Most Venerable Thich Quang Xa, Vice Chairman of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) and head of the provincial VBS chapter.
