Authorities in Ha Noi and HCM City have been ordered to reduce the number of vehicles on congested streets during rush hours.

Than Van Thanh, director of the National Transport Safety Committee's Office, said the vehicle ban was necessary to reduce chronic congestion. However, he said the prohibition would take several years to implement.

In addition, the Government has asked for safety measures to be stepped up, and for stiffer penalties to be imposed on motorists who break road regulations.

The ministry has been ordered to submit its traffic calming measure to the Government in the last quarter of next year.

Meanwhile, to mark National Transport Safety Month, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the deputy prime minister and chairman of the National Transport Safety Committee, has called on Ha Noi to implement measures to improve public transport, limit the number of private vehicles on the roads, raise investment for infrastructure and ease congestion hotspots.
