Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich enlisted Hudson to perform at the event at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles after Houston, one of the United States' top vocalists, was found dead in the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel Saturday afternoon.
"Our plan at this point, I've asked Jennifer Hudson to come," Ehrlich told CNN on Saturday. "We're really, at this point talking about what she's going to do, but it will be something respectful."
Ehrlich has already gone through the script for the telecast and made some changes. "It's not going to be a full-blown tribute, to me that feels like it's too early, it's too fresh at this moment, so we're working on something that will be really respectful and appropriate to Whitney's memory," he said.
Houston was originally expected to attend the awards event and be a guest Saturday night at a Beverly Hilton tribute for music executive Clive Davis, her mentor, who discovered her in the 1980s.
The 48-year-old, award-winning singer, who was also an actress, producer and model, was best known for her chart-topping single "I Will Always Love You" from the film "The Bodyguard" in 1992.
Her other big hits include "How Will I Know" and "Saving All My Love for You."
As one of the most successful pop singers in modern music history, Houston was remembered as the most awarded female vocalist of all time, garnering a total of 415 awards, including six Grammy Awards, 22 American Music Awards and countless other accolades, according to Guinness World Records.
Often referred to as the "Queen of Pop" or simply "the Voice," she was also one of the best-selling music artists in the world, having sold more than 170 million albums and singles.
