State President Truong Tan Sang made the affirmation at a December 29 meeting in Hanoi marking the victory’s 40th anniversary.
The meeting’s attendees included Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Truong Tan Sang, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, National Assembly Vice Chairman Tong Thi Phong, President of the VFF Central Committee Huynh Dam, Defence Minister Phung Quang Thanh, and Secretary of the Hanoi municipal Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi.
They were joined by other former senior leaders, revolutionary war veterans, and heroic mothers, along with representatives from the armed forces and defence ministries of Russia, China, Laos, Cambodia, Cuba, Belarus, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
The meeting began with a 30 minute art performance entitled “The resounding victory of Hanoi-Dien Bien Phu battle in the air”. It juxtaposed flashbacks of the peaceful lives of Hanoians with the fighting spirit of the capital city’s soldiers and people during the battle’s 12 days and nights.
In his speech, President Sang highlighted the historic victory’s important contribution to the nation’s ultimate triumph in its anti-US resistance war, adding the battle should be regarded with pride by future Vietnamese generations.
On behalf of the Party, State, and people of Vietnam, Sang expressed profound gratitude to international friends and peace-loving people everywhere—including Americans—for their wholehearted support.
The ravages of the war’s losses and sacrifices, all equally esteemed, mean Vietnamese people treasure the peace required for national construction and development. Honouring their tradition of friendship and with a desire to close the past while looking towards the future, Vietnamese people want to strengthen all their international relationships of cooperation and mutual development. Sang stressed Vietnam is a friend, a reliable partner, and a responsible member of the international community, maintaining a peaceful and stable environment for its national industrialization and modernization journeys. It continues to defend national independence, sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and its national interests.
After the President’s speech, representatives from forces directly involved in the battle joined with younger participants in vowing to use the inspiration and lessons of the air battle victory to further the current process of national construction and defence.
