Ha Noi authorities have urged districts and communes to help police curb crime, traffic accidents and congestion in the city.

Regular patrols would be imposed to limit robberies and crimes in public areas and to stop traffic violations, he said at a meeting held on Monday by the municipal People's Committee reviewing a one-month campaign to ensure traffic safety and social order.

In the campaign just gone, police handled nearly 55,000 violations, handing out total fines of nearly VND19 billion (US$904,760) and revoking more than 4,800 driving licenses.

During the period, the city recorded 156 traffic accidents, killing 41 people and injuring 176 others.

Ngoc acknowledged that businesses appropriating pavement for trade and cases of illegal parking still happened in some areas, while traffic congestion still existed on a number of routes, particularly during rush hour.

He proposed municipal authorities speed up construction of traffic infrastructure projects such as the on-going flyover development at the Nguyen Chi Thanh-Kim Ma intersection in Dong Da District to help ease traffic jams.

Deputy Chairman of the municipal People's Committee Nguyen Van Khoi required authorities of districts and communes to take stricter measures to help reduce the number of traffic accidents and congestion and determinedly clear traders illegally using pavements in order to make room for pedestrians.
