Nguyen Xuan Man, head of the forest ranger unit in Ha Loc District, Ha Tinh Province, said on November 10 that they were collaborating with related agencies to deal with illegal poaching in the area.
Many traps found in the forest
Many locals in Loc Ha and Nghi Xuan districts have filed complaints about three men from Ky Anh District illegally hunting animals on Hong Linh Mountain. The animals are then sold to a restaurant in Cuong Gian Commune, Nghi Xuan District.
Man said, "We patrolled the protected forest area from 8 am to 3 pm and discovered 300 traps. They are simple traps made from bicycle brake cables not long ago."
Hong Linh Mountain is located among Can Loc, Loc Ha and Nghi Xuan districts. There are mostly pine trees and low shrubs in the mountain where muntjac, monkey and weasels live. The traps were placed along the trails that the animals often use. So in some areas, the forest rangers were unable able to find anything while they could find a trap every 10-200 metres in other places.
According to the locals, the poachers have only become active in the past two weeks and even the cattle were also trapped.
"We haven't found any trapped wild animals and we also don't have evidence to detain anyone yet," Man said.
Man said the situation had been reported to the Ha Tinh Forest Protection Department and Hong Linh Forest Management Board.
