Almost 400, 000 of them are in universities and the rest are enrolled in colleges. About 520,000 applications were processed based on the national high school exam results, and 130,000 based on students' official transcripts.

The national high school exam was held at 99 locations across the country for the first time, with close to a million students taking the exam.

The report reaffirmed the ministry's stand that the national high school exam held this year was successful in reducing stress on students and helped to save money, compared with previous years, as it effectively combined the high school exam and university and college entrance exams.

The exam period was also reduced from nine to five days, while four to eight subjects were covered in the exam, instead of the seven to 13 subjects covered earlier. The students were also allowed to take the exam in their home towns or at least in nearby towns, instead of having to go to cities as before.

The ministry report also said there were several shortcomings and limitations in the organisation of the exam, such as inadequate database and software being used to process student applications as well as the admission process.

The ministry said it would continue to improve the organisation of the national high school exam.
