VietNamNet Bridge – Top medium-distance runner Truong Thanh Hang aims for an Olympic ticket as she seeks her second gold medal today at the 26th Southeast Asia (SEA) Games in Indonesia.

Hang will compete in her favourite 800m event after winning on Sunday her fourth 1,500m gold medal in a row at the Games.

The HCM City-based athlete has dominated the SEA Games' 1,500m and 800m events for years.

"I will try my best to achieve a time of 2:01.30, which is Olympic Standard B, to qualify for London next year. The A standard is 1:59," Hang said.

She also complained about the substandard condition of the facilities and accommodation for Vietnamese track-and-field athletes at the SEA Games.

"The athletics is held in a small stadium. There are not enough lights on the pitch. I also have to share a room with five other athletes," the Asian 800m champion said.

Viet Nam have historically been one of the top countries in athletics at many SEA Games, thanks to a generation of talented athletes like Hang, Vu Van Huyen, Vu Thi Huong and many others.

The future of athletics is bright for Viet Nam for years to come as many young names have emerged and are able to replace veteran athletes.

"Young athletes are making rapid progress, like Do Thi Thao in the women's 1,500m, or Duong Thi Viet Anh in the women's high jump, or Nguyen Ngoc Quang in the men's 110m hurdles, or Nguyen Thanh Phuc in the women's walk," the 25-year-old said.
