Ha Noi had set a goal of completing 10 important projects to stop flooding in the city by end of the second quarter, said Vo Tien Hung, general director of the Ha Noi Sewerage and Drainage Company at a press conference on Tuesday.

The projects are aimed at preventing flooding on major streets, including Vinh Hung, Quan Nhan, Kim Hoa, Duc Giang, Hoang Mai, Tay Mo, Tho Nhuom, Tay Son, Cu Loc and Chau Van Liem.

However, Hung said the city had failed to address flooding in areas where sewers and drains had not been completed.

The company has dredged canals, installed water reservoir systems and maintained pumping systems.

Work has also been carried out to construct new sewer systems to collect domestic waste water, and repair existing sewers and drains. Tankers will also be used to drain away excess floodwater following heavy rain.

Deputy director of the Ha Noi Drainage Project Management Board, Nguyen Manh Hung, said that the ongoing drainage project would play an important role to stop flooding in the city.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, 4-5 storms along with some tropical low pressure would affect Ha Noi in 2015. Rainfall would also increase by 5-10 per cent during peak months.

Drainage systems have not been completed in the city's new districts of Bac Tu Liem and Nam Tu Liem. Many ongoing projects such as ring road 2 and the urban railway are still constructing technical infrastructure relating to water drainage and sewers.
