Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, Duong Duc Tuan, has officially signed the decision approving the route plan and construction site locations for Metro Line 5, running from Van Cao to Hoa Lac.
The proposal was developed by the Hanoi Institute of Planning and Architecture in 2025 and has been evaluated by the Department of Planning and Architecture.
The main line starts at the Van Cao - Hoang Hoa Tham intersection and ends at Thach Binh Station (Hoa Lac), spanning approximately 39.6 kilometers. Additionally, there are two branches extending to Depot 1 (Son Dong, Duong Hoa) and Depot 2 (Hoa Lac), with a combined length of around 4.8 kilometers.
The route includes 20 stations: 6 underground, 3 elevated, and 11 at ground level. These are primarily arranged along the Thang Long Boulevard and the Hoa Lac - Hoa Binh Expressway. Many stations will offer direct connections with other urban railway lines including Lines 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and Monorail M2, forming an integrated transportation network.
The line features a mixed structural design: an underground section from Van Cao through Lieu Giai, Nguyen Chi Thanh, and Tran Duy Hung; followed by elevated and ground-level sections from the National Convention Center to Hoa Lac.
Two main depots are planned for the project:
Depot 1 (32 hectares): will serve both Line 5 and Line 8 and will integrate a vehicle assembly plant.
Depot 2 (10.4 hectares): located within the Hoa Lac urban planning zone.
The Hanoi People’s Committee has assigned the Department of Planning and Architecture to review and verify the drawings. Meanwhile, the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board is tasked with publicizing the plan and setting boundary markers. Relevant ward and commune-level authorities are responsible for managing land and markers according to the approved plan.
