After the Hanoi People's Council approved the road maintenance fee for motorcycles last week, the city People's Committee has specified and started collecting the fees from July 12.

Motorcycles of the police force, defense and those of poor households in accordance with the law are exempt from the fees.

For the motorcycles that were registered before 01/01/2013, the fees must be paid from August 2013, for 12 months. For motorcycles registered from 01/01/2013 to 30/6/2013, the vehicle owners must pay the fees for six months. The time of declaration and payment is no later than August 30, 2013. The vehicles that were registered from July1 to December 31, 2013, the fees must be paid in January 2014, paying for the entire 2014.

The People's Committees of communes, wards and townships will collect the fees. They are allowed to keep from 10 to 20 percent of the fees. The remaining amount will be transferred to the road maintenance fund at the State Treasury.

According to the Decree of the Government, the fees collected from motorcycles will be used to maintain local roads. Revenues from cars will use to maintain the highway system.
