Students from Hanoi who win gold medals in international Olympic competitions for academic subjects will now receive rewards of up to VND 300 million ($12,200) - a 15-fold increase from previous years.

On the morning of December 10, the 16th Hanoi People's Council approved a resolution setting new reward levels for students excelling in national and international competitions, as well as for teachers who train and mentor these achievers.

The resolution specifies that eligible recipients include students winning gold (first prize), silver (second prize), bronze (third prize), consolation prizes, special prizes, or other awards in international and regional competitions sanctioned by the Ministry of Education and Training or delegated to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

The reward amounts have been significantly increased - ranging from double to 15 times higher than previous amounts. These increases are categorized by subject area (academic and technical sciences), competition level, and award type.

International Academic Olympics:

Gold: VND 300 million
Silver: VND 200 million
Bronze: VND 150 million
Consolation: VND 100 million

Regional and International Science Competitions: Rewards range from VND 50 million to VND 200 million.

National and City-Level Awards: Rewards vary from VND 10 million to VND 50 million, with city-level awards only applying to first prizes.

Special consideration is given to students with disabilities and those from ethnic minority groups, whose rewards will be increased by 1.5 to 2 times the standard amount. Teachers who directly train and mentor award-winning students will receive 70% of the students' reward amount.

The resolution, which takes effect immediately, allocates funding from the city’s budget to implement the new reward structure.

In July, Hanoi’s People’s Committee initially proposed a maximum reward of VND 250 million for international gold medals and VND 150 million for regional awards. However, the finalized resolution raised the maximum reward by an additional VND 50 million, underscoring the city’s commitment to supporting academic excellence.
