Vice head of Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports Tran Quoc Chiem

Tran Quoc Chiem, vice head of Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, announced on January 16 notable activities that will be held for Tet Holiday. One of them is firework displays at 30 wards, communes and districts in the capital.

Only five locations including Hoan Kiem Lake, Thong Nhat Park, Lac Long Quan Garden, Van Quan Lake and My Dinh Stadium will have high-altitude displays. The local authorities of other communes and districts will decide on the height of their displays.

There are also many other activities such as light and sound street festival, swimming contests at the West Lake, Linh Dam Lake and a traditional wrestling contest at Dan Phuong District.

Vice Chairman of Soc Son District People's Committee Le Huu Manh said they revised this year Giong Festival to avoid chaos as visitors fought for sacred offerings. "I think fighting for sacred offerings is a folk tradition. However, it's wrong when there are visitors attacking people to snatch the offerings," he said.

Manh said they had dealt with such case many times and no one encouraged a festival like that.

Nguyen Van Hau, vice chairman of My Duc District People's Committee, also promised to work with the monks at Huong Pagoda to avoid a violent fight for offerings like in 2017.
