Salome is the most widely known work by the composer. He based his opera on the play by Oscar Wilde. But he used a German libretto, instead of the original French language source Wilde used for the play.

The opera and play are based on the Biblical story of Salome, who demanded the head of John the Baptist on a platter as payment for pleasing Herod with her Dance of the Seven Veils. The opera was controversial when it premiered. It was banned by the censors of many European countries.

The version Cinematheque will screen was originally produced for Austrian television. It is considered one of the finest versions available.

Tickets are available through the Opera Guild. Contact info@hanoioperaguild.com for more information. A donation of VND60,000 is suggested.
