Thousand of impounded motorbikes held at the My Dinh Bus Station in Hanoi have been lashed by rain and burned by the sun for months or in same cases even years. They were all either involved in accidents or were impounded after their owners broke traffic laws.

Many are of the expensive kind, like Honda SH or Piaggio, but left outside have now become worthless scrap.

While most agree with the principle of impounding motorbikes when their owners break the law they also believe that responsible agencies have a duty of care and should hold them in a covered area. Even when they are reclaimed by their owners after only a month or so there can be some long-lasting damage.

“There are a lot of expensive motorbikes here, and leaving them outside in the rain and sun is a waste,” said local resident Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang.
