Ngo Van Nam, one of the four people in the car, said that they had noticed a burning smell shortly before smoke rose from the front. They immediately got out of the car. Around 15 minutes later, the vehicle burst into flames.
Rescue workers arrived at the site around 30 minutes later but the vehicle became a sheer mass of metal and ash.
“This is a second-hand car I bought from an acquaintance in 2006. It was registered in 2001. I had never before seen any signs of explosion or fire on it,” said the car owner Ngo Van Ninh.
He said they were heading from Hanoi’s Chuong My district to Nam Dinh Province, and had just traveled 15 kilometers before the fire broke out.
Several motorbikes and cars have been reported to unexpectedly catch on fire in the past few weeks while traveling. One that occurred in Bac Ninh province on December 1, killed a 29-year-old pregnant woman and her 4-year-old daughter when their Honda bike, the Dream II, suddenly exploded into flames.
