VietNamNet Bridge – At the proposal of the Hanoi People’s Committee, parking fee in the capital will increase highly, to possibly reach VND40,000 ($2)/time for cars of less than 10 seats and VND3.5 million ($140) a month.

Hanoi’s Vice Chair Nguyen Huy Tuong said that parking fee in 10 inner district and the suburban district of Tu Liem will rise to VND3,000-5,000 per day and VND5,000 per night. The parking fee for both night and day is proposed to be VND8,000-10,000/motorbike and VND4,000/bicycle.

The parking fee for cars (not longer than 2 hours) is estimated at VND20,000-40,000 for cars of less than 10 seats and trucks of less than 2 tons. The fee will be VND25,000-50,000 for cars of ten seats upwards and trucks of over 2 tons. The highest parking fee will be applied in four downtown districts of Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Hai Ba Trung and Dong Da.

The current fee for two groups of vehicles are VND10,000 and VND20,000/time.

For the monthly fee, the charge for parking will be highest at roofed parking lots in the four downtown districts, VND1.2-1.6 million/month for cars of less than ten seats. At streets that are restricted from parking and stop, the fee is up to VND3-3.5 million/month.

At high-rise building and shopping malls, the parking fee for motorbikes will be VND5,000-6,000/time and VND10,000/day and night while it will be up to VND50,000/cars/time. Monthly fee will be VND180,000/motorbike and VND3 million/car.

Hanoi authorities said that the current parking fee has not been adjusted for five years and it is no longer suitable to the current situation. Hanoi has many high-rise buildings and luxurious shopping malls which have underground parking lots with modern equipment. The parking fee at these buildings must be higher to encourage investors to build basements as parking lots when they build high-rise buildings.

In four downtown districts, higher fee will help reduce the volume of vehicles. Revenue from parking fee will be used to repair pavements.

The Hanoi People’s Council will consider the new parking fee at the year’s end meeting, which is scheduled in early December 2011.
