VietNamNet Bridge – The capital city’s Party congress began this morning, October 26, with the participation of 498 deputies, who represent 330,000 Party members in Hanoi.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hanoi Party Secretary Pham Quang Nghi said that the Hanoi Party Committee in the 2006-2010 term experienced a historical change: the merge of Ha Tay Party cell into Hanoi Party cell after Ha Tay province was merged into the capital in 2008.

 

Hanoi Chair Nguyen The Thao presented the report about the city’s economic and social situation in 2006-2010 period, according to which, the city’s GDP grew 10.4 percent annually, 1.5 folds over the country’s average. The city is still leading in terms of the amount of foreign investment attracted.

The city aims to have GDP growth rate of 12-13 percent and per capita income $4100-4300 by 2015. Earlier, HCM City announced the goal of having per capita income of $4800 by 2015.

At the congress, deputies will review the operation of the Hanoi Party Committee in the 2006-2010 term, make comments to the draft documents of the 11th National Party Congress, and elect the new Party Committee, etc.

There are 86 nominees for the election, including 3 percent of people at the age of less than 40, 36 percent from 40-50 and 59 percent of over 50 years old.

Vice Party Secretary said that Hanoi didn’t meet the goal of having up to 15 percent of nominees who are less than 40 years old.

The 75-member Hanoi Party Committee will attend a close meeting on October 27 to elect the Hanoi Party Secretary and Vice Secretaries. The list will be announced on October 28.
