Vice chairman of Ha Noi People's Committee Nguyen Quoc Hung has approved a pilot power saving street light system being tested through June 25.

The roads chosen for the test are Thang Long Boulevard, the route from Nhat Tan Bridge to Noi Bai International Airport, and extended parts of National Highway No 5 that runs from North Thang Long – Van Tri Urban Area to Chui Bridge in Long Bien District.

The output of the lighting system, or total "amount" of visible light emitted by the system, will be alternated, rather than delivered at a fixed rate, as done currently.

For instance, on Thang Long Boulevard, the light output is to be reduced to 70 per cent of its capacity from 6.15 pm to 9 pm, and only 30 per cent of it capacity after 9 pm when there is less traffic.

On Nhat Tan-Noi Bai route and extended parts of National Highway No 5, 70 per cent of total light output will operate from 6.15 pm to 11pm, and only 30 per cent after 11 pm.

The vice chairman asked the city's Transport Department to carry out the pilot programme and to evaluate its energy efficiency and road safety on the test routes.

If the pilot programme is proved effective, it might be expanded onto other roads in the city.
