VietNamNet Bridge – Within a month of implementing a campaign against drunk drivers, Hanoi traffic police have handled 676 cases, collecting more than VND1 billion ($50,000) of fines.

The campaign was launched on December 15, 2014. It was divided into three periods: the first from December 12-31 last year, the second from January 15-31, and the third from February 2-28.

The campaign aims to reduce the number of traffic accidents caused by alcohol, especially at the end of the year.

According to the Hanoi police agency, in the first two periods, the police detected 676 violations, imposing fines totaling VND1.07 billion.

A representative of the Hanoi Railway-Road Police Division said that people tend to drink more alcohol before and during the lunar New Year so the number of violations on the road will increase.

“We will continue to aggressively control the traffic in the third period because the majority of accidents are related to alcohol. Traffic police teams will work in two shifts, from 12 to 16h and from 18h to 22h everyday,” he said

According to current rules, the fines range from VND8 million to VND15 million ($400-$750) for drunk drivers of automobiles and VND500,000 to VND3 million ($25-$150) for drunk drivers of motorbikes.

In addition to fines, violators’ driving licences are revoked for 30-60 days.
