On June 30, a team from the municipal crime prevention department caught Chang Khai Yeu, 27, and Hsieh Ming Hsin, 31, while they were using stolen cards to withdraw money from an automated teller machine (ATM) in Nguyen Thi Dinh Street, Cau Giay District.

The police searched them and discovered 54 ATM cards issued by Vietnamese banks and nearly VND283 million or US$13,200 in their possession. The goods have been seized.

Preliminary investigations showed that the accused conspired with some Vietnamese persons to call certain people and make them pay the phone charges or pose as policemen to extort money.

They used software which faked the polices telephone number to defraud the victims. At least VND7 billion or $330,000 was reportedly extorted.

The case is under further investigation.
