Dao Vinh Thang, head of the Ha Noi Traffic Department, said cyclos and electric cars often operated in restricted areas of the city, such as areas surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake and Noi Bai International Airport.

Despite a ban, several unauthorised coaches, whose colour is similar to that of the buses, are seen near the city’s key bus stations, such as Giap Bat, Gia Lam, Nuoc Ngam and Nam Thang Long. These vehicles usually violate traffic regulations by not following fixed routes and not picking and dropping off passengers at designated points.

During the campaign, which lasts until the end of this month, the traffic police will intensify the checking of cyclos, electric cars, and coaches to determine whether they are unregistered vehicles or carrying more passengers than permitted or oversized goods, Thang said.

Those vehicles which cross the red line or operate in restricted areas will also be subject to penalties.

On Monday morning, the police penalised 40 cyclo drivers near Ngoc Son Temple, who failed to show valid papers or were carrying more passengers than permitted.
