VietNamNet Bridge – The city authorities in Hanoi have asked relevant agencies to develop a plan to cope with super storms, given that the weather is changing due to climate change. The plan aims to proactively respond to natural disasters to mitigate the consequences of such storms.
A traffic light post collapsed in a rainstorm in Hanoi in early June.
Hanoi’s Deputy Chair Tran Xuan Viet has instructed the Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention to review, adjust and supplement its storm and flood prevention scheme, including specific plans for evacuation in strong storms.
Viet has also instructed the Departments of Construction, Agriculture and Rural Development, Planning - Architecture, and the People's Committees of all districts to tighten control over construction of houses and other facilities along rivers and in low-lying areas to reduce risks caused by natural disasters.
According to Mr. Do Duc Thinh, Director of the Hanoi Dyke Management Department, there will be no flood in the city this June, but some rainstorms and whirlwinds have caused relatively serious damage to property and human life. At least three people died in a rainstorm early this month.
Hanoi’s weather has been unusually hot with big rains. The annual rainfall this year may be hundreds of milimeters.
He also said that Hanoi is favored by nature but still has to face many super storms, at least two to three major hurricanes this year. The city currently has nine major dikes that are being urgently reinforced before the rainy season.
