Hanoi’s market bustling for first full moon festival
Despite rainy conditions, many markets throughout Hanoi were packed with people shopping for offerings for the the first full moon of the year, known as Tet Nguyen Tieu, from the early morning of February 24.
Wet markets in the capital are busy from the early morning of February 24, even though it is both drizzly and cold.
Both buyers and traders don raincoats and hats to protect against the cold. The temperature in Hanoi in the early morning ranges from between 14 to 15 degrees Celsius.
Fresh flowers are one of the best-selling items these days. Flower prices are quite stable, not increasing much in comparison to normal days
Specifically, roses with bud branches are sold for between VND10,000 and VND12,000 for each flower, chrysanthemums for VND35,000 per dozen, or lillies for between VND20,000 and VND 30,000 for each stem.
Peach blossoms are sold at between VND50,000 and VND150,000 pet stem.
Grapefruit flowers also attract customers during this holiday, with items priced from VND300,000 per kilo.
Many people wait to buy goods in the area such as boiled chicken to give as offerings.
Roasted birds and chickens also attract customers with the price from VND150,000 each.
Chung or square cake is sold for between VND60,000 and VND 80,000 each. Five-colour sticky rice, or Vietnamese red sticky rice, are sold at between VND50,000 and VND100,000 each.
Although consumption demand increases sharply at this time of year, the prices of fruits hardly increases compared to normal days. Red-fleshed dragon fruit costs from VND65,000 to VND70,000 per kilo, white-fleshed dragon fruit costs from VND40,000 to VND50,000 per kilo, oranges are from VND35,000 to VND50,000 per kilo, and apples cost between VND30,000 and VND 50,000.
The owners of vegetable stalls are working faster than usual during this time.
