VietNamNet Bridge – Hanoi’s Vice Chair Nguyen Van Khoi on April 26 asked districts to propose more streets free from parking, besides the current 267 streets of this kind.

Mr. Khoi said that the model of streets free from parking, which is applied for 262 streets in the city, had proven to be effective. Without parking vehicles, these roads have become clearer and this policy is warmly supported by the people.

As Long Bien and Thanh Xuan districts also want to apply this model, Mr. Khoi asked districts to research and suggest more streets for being banned from parking.

Earlier, Hanoi authorities decided to ban parking lots on 262 roads in nine districts and tightened control over parking fees. One week ago, the city banned parking in five more roads, raising the total number to 267.

However, inspection at 30 parking lots at hospitals, schools and markets in the capital city in the first quarter of 2012 shows that 18 units collected higher fees than permitted level and 16 broke regulations on vouchers.

The city set up two inspection groups to deal with parking lots that occupy roads and pavements. Inspectors detected 74 car-parks that violated the rules, imposing VND530 million ($26,500).
