A plan to build new water plants and upgrade the capacity of existing ones has been approved by the chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Nguyen Duc Chung.

The proposal details plans to build the Duong River water supply system, the Hong (Red) River water plant, the Xuan Mai water plant, with a capacity of 300,000cu.m per day, and the water plant in the Tien Thinh Commune in Me Linh District, which will have a capacity of 25,000 cu.m per day.

The Da River water plant project will be redesigned in the second phase of the project to improve its capacity by 300 to 600 cu.m per day.

The Phu Son water plant in Ba Vi District will have its capacity upgraded by 50,000 to 100,000 cu.m per day.

The city will conduct a study to use water from the Quan Son Lake in My Duc District as a domestic water supply source.

Hanoi will also implement nine water supply system projects in 78 communes to serve nearly 700,000 residents.

Funds will be sourced from the budget of local authorities and mobilised from the private sector.

A number of people living in the city, especially in outlying districts, do not have access to clean water.

Residents in the Yen So Ward of Hoang Mai District have been suffering from allergic reactions caused by contaminated domestic water, vov.vn reported last month.

In Linh Quy Village, Kim Son Commune, Gia Lam District, thousands of people live by sewers and use highly-polluted ground water. Residents there have to spend their own money to purchase water filter systems.
