VietNamNet Bridge – The Hanoi authorities have agreed with the Department of Transport’s proposal on the construction of 24 new parking lots at the cost of over VND700 billion (over $33.3 million) from now to 2015.

The Hanoi Department of Transport plans to build 24 multi-storey or underground car-parks, using capital from various sources by 2015.

Most of the car-parks will be built in the capital city’s suburbs or along the belt road No. 3. The total investment capital for these projects is estimated at VND778.2 billion.

Of the 24 new car-parks that will be built by 2015, Cau Giay District will have five; Tu Liem District with 8; Thanh Tri, Thanh Xuan and Hoang Mai Districts with 2 each; Dong Anh, Hai Ba Trung, Tay Ho and Long Bien Districts with 1 each.

The Hanoi authorities also asked the Department of Transport to build more bus stops and transit ports for various kinds of vehicles in the city hub and in the suburban districts of Hoang Mai, Tu Liem, Gia Lam, Thanh Tri, Dong Anh, Dan Phuong, Chuong My and Ha Dong.

According to the Hanoi Department of Transport, Hanoi has more than 5 million vehicles of all kinds, including over 370,000 cars, 3.7 million motorbikes and over 1 million bicycles. The number of vehicles rises by 15 percent yearly while the existing parking lots can serve only 10 percent of the total vehicles, said the department’s deputy director Nguyen Hoang Linh.

Linh added that Hanoi would also upgrade the current bus stops and turn some truck stops in the city’s center into parking lots. Some operating parking lots in Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, Ba Dinh and Dong Da will be restructured or closed.
