Mr. Le Van Thu, Tu Liem District’s Party Secretary, said that local residents supported the splitting of Tu Liem into two districts and they suggested 25 pairs of names for the new districts.

Up to 90.5 percent of locals liked the names Bac Tu Liem and Nam Tu Liem. "People think that Bac (North) or Nam (South) is not the name, just a geographical indication. The real name is still Tu Liem. The people want to keep the name because it was born in 221 BC," Thu said.

Thu hoped that Hanoi authorities to take into account the wish of Tu Liem’s people.

The Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that Bac Tu Liem and Nam Tu Liem imply orientation rather than place names. He suggested My Dinh because this name is associated with many large projects in the area.

Many of Hanoi’s officials agreed with this official, saying that the northern district should be called Tu Liem and the one in the north should be named My Dinh.

Mr. Ho Quang Loi, head of the Hanoi Party Committee’s PR Department, said that the names of the new districts are not only meaningful to local people but it is an important matter of Hanoi so the names should not be local.

Bac Tu Liem District is in the north of Tu Liem district with a population of more than 319,000 people, covering an area of 4,335 hectares, and a population density of 7,377 people per km2.
