Nghi told Hanoi constituents who attended a meeting on Tuesday that Tu Liem is the most populous district in Hanoi, with more than 500,000 people. This is why the district should be split into two for easier management.

"Tu Liem District has a population of over half a million people. The district is the home to many universities, colleges and new urban areas which have been formed for many years,” Nghi said.

Some voters of Hai Ba Trung district also proposed splitting Vinh Tuy ward into two wards because the ward’s population is up to 30,000 people while the area is only 1.6 km2.

Nghi said not only Vinh Tuy Ward is populous. Hoan Kiem district has a big population but its area is only a few square kilometers.

Tu Liem district has 16 administrative units, including the town of Cau Dien and 15 communes with a total area of 75.15 km2 and a population of 550,000 people. This is also the area with the highest urbanization rate in Hanoi.

The plan to split Tu Liem District was prepared by the Hanoi People's Committee for many years ago but it has not yet been reviewed or considered by the Hanoi People’s Council.
