VietNamNet Bridge – Like every other year of their tradition, the people of Thi Cam village in Xuan Phuong commune, Tu Liem district, Hanoi organized their annual rice cooking contest on the 8th day of the lunar year.
The traditional festival which fell on January 30 is held to honor Phan Tay Nhac, the village
tutelary who was a general for the 18th Hung King who reigned about 2,000 years ago.
The general then frequently hosted rice cooking contest to find the best cook for his army.
Traditionally, villagers are divided into four groups of 10 members, who wear uniform in
different colors and compete in igniting fire, running, pounding rice and cooking it.
The group with the most delicious rice is declared the winner.
