HCM City and Binh Duong Province have spent more than VND1 trillion (US$44 million) on anti-flooding projects but have not emphasised pollution treatment at Ba Bo Canal.

Nguyen Hong Nguyen, deputy director of the Binh Duong Province’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, explained that urban wastewater discharged from the Di An and Thuan An communes and nearby factories has polluted Ba Bo Canal.

To effectively clean the canal and its nearby areas, it is important for relevant authorities to coordinate.

Between 2017 and 2018, Binh Duong will increase monitoring at Song Than Industrial Zone I and II, impose strict penalties on misconduct and improve water drainage systems at household areas.

Meanwhile, HCM City will officially run the wastewater treatment plant at Ba Bo Canal, regularly monitor its water quality and share collected information with Binh Duong Province.

Ba Bo Canal is one of the main drainage channels of Thu Duc District’s Binh Chieu and Linh Trung wards in HCM City and Hoa Binh, Tan Dong Hiep and Di An wards in Binh Duong Province.

As of July 2017, its water quality had not significantly improved. The amount of ammonium salt was 11.6 to 19.4 times higher compared to standard.
