The People’s Committee has asked the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and district People’s Committees and other departments to prohibit the filling of canals and rivers for construction projects, which can reduce drainage during rains.
The chairman of each district People’s Committee will be responsible for handling violators.
Each district People’s Committee will also be responsible for monitoring the situation and report results to the city’s People’s Committee and Steering Centre for Urban Flood Control.
Tran Vinh Tuyen, deputy chairman of the People’s Committee, has directed the Department of Transport to meet with the steering centre to make plans to inform the public about flood prevention activities.
The steering centre will also send inspection teams to some key flood-prone areas.
The centre will work with Thu Duc District’s People Committee to evaluate a pilot programme involving a rainwater reservoir in the district. If successful, the project will be implemented in other flooding areas in the city.
According to the centre, rains have occurred 22 times this year, with four of them causing flooding on 32 streets.
The city’s People Committee has also recommended that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment cut off electricity and water supply for businesses that pollute the environment.
